Diving in and around Koh Phi Phi Thailand

Local Dive Sites

King Cruiser, Shark Point, Anenome Reef

Hin Muang & Hin Daeng

The diving in and around Koh Phi Phi is quite varied.

Local dive sites are no more than a 40-45minute boat ride away from the main town. Popular local sites include Bida Nok, Bida Nai, Maya Bay, Palong Bay and Shark Point Phi Phi.

Bida Nok and Bida Nai are two small islands at the south end of Phi Phi Lei. They are good sites for those who have never ever dived as well as for advanced divers. Although they are not deep sites (max about 32m) they are full of life. Leopard sharks frequent the sites (and if you are lucky you might even get to see them mating!). The sites are littered with schools of rainbow runners, damselfish, anenome fish (Nemo!) soft and hard corals, nudibranches, baracuda and more. You are never short of seeing something of interest. Bida Nai has some nice swim throughs and extending out from the island is Fantasy Reef - don't forget to look under rocks for Bamboo Sharks! These two dive sites are in my opinion world class sites due to the insane numbers of fish and variety of fish. They are visited daily due to their popularity and I STILL haven't seen the site the same way twice.

Maya Bay is where the movie the Beach was filmed. The dive site starts on the edge of the bay and works out around the north west corner. There are several swimthroughs here as well. Turtles like to frequent this site as do a wonderful nudibranch called the blue dragon.

Palong Bay offers three sites - the Bay itself (which is wonderful for night dives) and heading North along the wall outside of the bay where there are chances of black tip reef sharks. Heading South along the wall outside the bay gives you nice little balmies with dancing shrimps, lobsters, octopus, seahorses, squid and baracuda among many of the other wonderful fishies in the area.

There have even been whale shark sitings around these local dive sites as well! But remember - whale sharks are like shooting stars - you never know where or when you will see them!±
